Suspension of Visa-Free Visit

Temporary Suspension of Visa-Free Visit Policy for 159 Countries

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights temporarily suspends the Visa-Free Visit Policy for 159 countries as stipulated under Decree of The Minister of Law and Human Rights Number M.HH-GR.01.07 of 2023. This decree has been in force since June 7th, 2023.

Previously under Presidential Regulation Number 21 of 2016, the Visa-Free Visit was given to 169 countries before the Covid-19 Pandemic, 10 of which are ASEAN countries. However, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, several restrictions against population mobility from and to Indonesia were in force. As a consequence, Indonesia’s borders were closed, and there were no foreign citizens that could enter the country.

With the lifting of the mobility restrictions due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, starting in March 2023, Indonesia’s borders are now gradually opened. Facilities such as Visa on Arrival and the Visa-Free Visit for 10 ASEAN countries have been re-introduced through Circular Letter Number IMI-0133.GR.01.01 of 2023. Up until last April 2023, there have been 92 countries whose citizens and foreign entities are eligible to apply for e-VOA and VOA. Click here to read more about the application of e-VOA and VOA.

Through this Ministerial Decree, the temporary suspension is applied to 159 countries, while nationals from the other 10 ASEAN countries are still eligible to make Visa-Free Visits to Indonesia, which is in line with the shared commitment under the ASEAN community.

Previously during the Visa-Free Visit period, citizens from 169 countries were free to enter Indonesia without visa for less than or equal to 60 days, and were not charged with any fee. The policy on Visa-Free Visit is then replaced with Visa on Arrival *(insert link to the VOA article)*, which now supports 92 countries. Unlike the Visa-Free Visit, in order to obtain VOA, foreign citizens need to pay for the Non-Tax State Income (PNBP).
